Equity in Thought and Action (ETA) is an educational consulting firm dedicated to promoting, activating, creating, translating, and operationalizing both practical and scientific research that centers on equity in student academic, professional, and personal success. This empowers individuals and institutions to be intentional in thought and actions to address the needs of students of the 21st century.
Equity refers to fairness and justice in various aspects of life. Rooted in the belief that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to succeed, equity seeks to address systemic disadvantages and promote a level playing field. At its core, equity acknowledges that individuals have different starting points and varying needs. It recognizes that treating everyone the same does not guarantee fairness, as it fails to account for existing disparities. In contrast, an equitable approach aims to ensure that everyone receives the support and resources necessary to achieve their full potential.
Equity encompasses social, economic, and educational domains, among others. In the social realm, it tackles discrimination and prejudices based on race, gender, sexuality, religion, or any other factors that can create barriers. It strives to dismantle systemic biases, promoting a society where every individual is treated with dignity and respect. In the economic sphere, equity seeks to bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots. It recognizes that historical and structural factors contribute significantly to disparities in wealth and access to opportunities.
Equity also plays a vital role in education. It recognizes that not all students start with the same advantages and that traditional one-size-fits-all approaches may perpetuate inequities and serve as a barrier to learning. An equitable education system ensures that students from marginalized communities receive the necessary support, resources, and opportunities to thrive academically. Promoting equity involves challenging the status quo.
Thought
A conscious mental awareness, processing, contemplating, and organizing information, ideas, and perceptions. Addressing inequities begins with the capacity to reason, conceptualize, imagine, sympathize, empathize, and reflect upon your experiences and the reality of others. These realities are examined and explored in a social, economic, health, and educational context while being viewed through an equity-centered and human rights lens. Thoughts give rise to beliefs, opinions, values, and goals, influencing our behaviors and shaping the course of our lives.
Action
Addressing inequities requires proactive and intentional measures of “action” to redistribute resources, provide equal access to quality jobs, and foster economic mobility for all. It demands addressing systemic barriers and biases and actively working toward dismantling them. This can include implementing affirmative action policies that provide opportunities for underrepresented groups, investing in equitable infrastructure and services in marginalized communities, and ensuring fair representation in decision-making processes.
